WOOSTER, OH (WOIO) - The man shot and killed by a Wayne County sheriff deputy Sunday morning has been identified as Rodney Geiser, 60, of Apple Creek.
Deputies said Geiser was armed with a semi automatic 9mm pistol and was walking around downtown Apple Creek threatening to harm himself.
Apple Creek police officers, Ohio Highway Patrol troopers and Wayne County deputies talked to Geiser for more than 30 minutes but he continued to hold a gun to his head and told officers they were going to have to “shoot him."
Geiser then started walking toward one of the deputies and refused to drop his gun, authorities said.
According to Wayne County Sheriff Captain Doug Hunter, Geiser was less than 40 feet from the deputy when the deputy fired one time.
Geiser was pronounced dead at Wooster Community Hospital.
BCI is handling the investigation and the deputy, whose name is not being released, is on leave per protocol.
