Lake Erie walleye population expected to increase, wildlife officials predict

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has good news for Lake Erie anglers.

The state’s wildlife agency says a 2018 survey conducted in the central basin of Lake Erie shows an “exceptional” walleye hatch, which means adult walleye abundance will continue to increase.

The young-of-the-year walleye catch rate was the highest recorded in the past 20 years, says the ODNR.

The survey coverage area extends from Vermilion to Conneaut. Results will be combined with data collected from other tests in New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada to estimate the hatches and population size of walleye.
