Lorain Sheriff’s Office warns of scam involving caller pretending to be deputy

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about a scam affecting residents in Northeast Ohio.

Victims have complained about receiving a telephone call from a male claiming to be Deputy Sheriff Cannon from Lorain County.

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office says the caller tells the victim that they failed to appear for jury duty. The scammer then asks for personal information, including a social security number and date of birth.

The sheriff’s office say there is currently nobody with the last name Cannon who is presently employed in the department. The phone number also displays as 440-363-6354, which is not a number related to the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office will not contact anyone by phone regarding failure to appear for jury duty or warrants, the department warns.

Anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a scam should contact the sheriff’s office at 440-329-3710.
