Suspect releases 15 race horses from Stark County Fairgrounds, 1 horse drowns (VIDEO)

CANTON, OH (WOIO) - Police arrested a 28-year-old Mansfield man for allegedly releasing 15 race horses from a barn at the Stark County Fairgrounds around 6 am Monday.

Canton police were able to catch 14 of the horses in the surrounding neighborhood.

Those horses were safely taken back to their barn, where they are being observed and checked out by their owners, trainers and veterinarian.

One horse drowned in Meyers Lake.

Officials said both Canton police and firefighters tried to save the animal, but were unsuccessful.

Canton City and Perry Township firefighters also helped with the rescue and recovery efforts.

Jonathan Ford is currently charged with breaking and entering, inducing panic, disrupting public service and possession of drugs.

Canton police said additional charges are possible.
