CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A Canadian man was sentenced to 11 years in prison for attempting to coerce an 11-year-old Ohio girl to engage in sexual activity.
Daniel Jason Wnek, a 28-year-old Toronto resident, pleaded guilty in 2018 to one count of coercion and/or enticement of a minor.
Investigators say Wnek’s contact with the victim began in 2017 on Instagram. He used a photograph of a younger male and lied to the girl, telling her he was 14 years old.
“This case demonstrates how predators will target our children over social media by posing as people different from who they truly are,” U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman said. “Parents and trusted adults need to make it their business to know who their kids are communicating with.”
Wnek sent scores of messages and explicit photos that were sexual in nature to the victim on social media, according to court documents, which include:
- “Would u lie on top of me when we meet?”
- “Yea x we can take our pants off n I’ll bring a blanket.”
The victim’s family contacted police. Law enforcement then began posing as the female victim and engaged in sexually-orientated conversations with Wnek on Snapchat, who continued to solicit the girl for sex and urge her to send him photos of herself.
Wnek was arrested on Nov. 13, 2018 in Orlando after telling the victim he was traveling to Disney World for his birthday.
The FBI and Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio assisted with the investigation.
