CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The Cleveland Indians phased out the Chief Wahoo logo from players’ uniforms after the 2018 season, but an organization that has long protested the controversial symbol will be at Progressive Field again for the 2019 home opener.

Native Americans and protesters against the use of the logo are expected to take part of the 27th annual demonstration heralded by the Committee of 500 Years of Dignity and Resistance.

Organizers are planning to march from West 25th Street at 1 p.m. to the corner of Progressive Field on Ontario Avenue. Past demonstrations from the group included individuals with signs and loudspeakers.

According to the demonstration guidelines posted by the organization:

We ask that our supporters that join us please focus on the issue of racism against the indigenous people. We understand there are other issues that are just as important, but this demonstration is for focusing on this issue only. We plan a peaceful and respectful demonstration. Those who cannot comply with our guidelines will be asked to leave.

We ask the demonstrators to please stay with each other and do not wander away. Look out for each other’s back.

Do not confront fans - Due to the mind set of certain people who now feel they have the right to attack demonstrators please keep this in mind so no one gets hurt.

Please refrain from vulgar language.

We may be surrounded with large police vehicles and a huge police presence. This is due to the Las Vegas shootings and what happened in Paris a couple of years ago. There is a reason they are present. DO NOT HARASS THEM.

Cleveland’s new uniforms without the Chief Wahoo logo, which dates back to the 1940s, were unveiled in November 2018.

The first Indians game at Progressive Field this year is scheduled for April 1.
