Northeast Ohio Weather: Thunderstorms to end the work week

Northeast Ohio Weather: Thunderstorms to end the work week

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Through the rest of the day Thursday, we'll stay dry and breezy with some fairly strong winds out of the east. Because of those easterly winds + a warm front hanging out south of Cleveland, we've got quite the temperature spread this afternoon! Expect highs near 70° south of Akron, and highs only in the 40s in Sandusky.

Join us at 9:30 p.m. for the latest weather livestream:

The west end of the lakeshore, mainly west of Sandusky, will also have to monitor for shoreline flooding through this evening.

Now, the huge system bringing blizzards, thunderstorms, dust storms, you name it, out to our west will gradually make its wave over the Great Lakes tomorrow. That'll allow for a cold front to slide through the area tomorrow morning/midday.

Because of this, we have issued a FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY for Friday morning/midday. Here are the details:

Ahead of the front, during the morning commute, isolated thunderstorms are possible. Looks like the main like of storms will pass through Cleveland around lunchtime and will continue to push east. East and south of Cleveland is where we have a little better chance of strong storms developing along that front. We've got a little more instability to help fire up storms the closer we get to PA as temperatures warm to the low 70s by the afternoon.

Still, in any strong thunderstorm we see develop, the main threat will be for strong winds and hail. However, even after the rain and storms have passed by the late afternoon, winds will still be strong through the rest of the day.

Expect wind gusts 40-45 mph+ through the rest of the evening. Friday evening will be mainly dry, with dropping temps and wind.

Saturday will be the best day of the weekend. Cooler with highs in the mid 60s, and mostly sunny.

Sunday things get messy again. Looks like we get "sandwiched" inbetween a few frontal systems, which means when the rain arrives by the early afternoon, it could be heavy at times. We'll have to monitor for localized flooding. Strong storm threat looks low, but our main threat for Sunday will be flooding.

We'll have rain linger through early Monday...and temps get cold again heading into the weekend:

Sunday's high: 58°Monday's high: 47°

We’re in this roller coaster temperature/rain pattern through next week. Very typical for April in Cleveland!
