CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The biggest holiday in the candy world isn’t Halloween. It’s Easter!
According to the owners of both local stores, Easter surpasses Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day for retail candy sales.
Dan Malley says they usually sell around 100,000 of their 10-ounce chocolate bunnies, and about 75,000 of their 1.5-ounce chocolate bunnies.
“We work double shifts starting the day after Valentine’s Day to meet the demand,” said Malley.
Other popular Easter products from the local chocolate maker include the caramel eggs, marshmallow eggs, 13 varieties of their luscious eggs and their 5-ounce Easter eggs filled with peanut butter, coconut, or maple nut.
Seasonal items like chocolate-covered jelly beans and chocolate-covered Peeps also fly off the shelves heading into Easter, according to Malley.
“We haven’t changed our recipes since 1935,” said Malley.
They still cook over an open flame with a copper kettle to preserve the quality they’re known for. Malley says more modern operations use stainless steel and steam, but those affect the taste and quality.
While Halloween is the biggest season for the wholesale arm of b.a. Sweetie Candy Company, owner Tom Scheiman says Easter is the biggest season for his retail customers. They have three aisles stocked with more than 300 kinds of Easter products.
They pride themselves on stocking all those nostalgic candies you grew up with and the newest products on the market. Products just weeks old, like Pokemon Pez and Clark cups, are available and on sale. They’ve stocked more than 4,300 of the new Clark cups.
“They’ll be gone by Easter,” said Scheiman.
Want a particular candy bar? They’ve got 180,000 on their candy bar wall. Looking for a particular licensed character Pez dispenser? They have 70 varieties and 4,000 in stock.
And if Jelly Bellies are a must around Easter for you, they also carry every flavor imaginable.
B.a. Sweetie has prepped additional staff to meet the volume of customers they see now through Easter. And Malley’s is offering free shipping through April 17 through their website and will be open on Easter Sunday.
