Drug use a suspected factor in fatal pedestrian accident in Perry Twp.

PERRY TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) - The Canton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian.

The accident occurred State Route 172 near the intersection of Miles Avenue NW around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Cheryl A. Evans, 59, of Massillon, was operating a blue 1997 Ford Taurus westbound on State Route 172.

Michael A. Tyson, age 69, of Massillon, Ohio was walking southbound, crossing State Route 172 not within a pedestrian cross walk when he was struck by the Taurus driven by Evans.

Tyson was pronounced deceased on scene and later transported to the Stark County Coroner’s Office.

Evans, the driver, was transported by Perry Township Fire Department to Mercy Hospital to be treated for minor injuries sustained in the crash.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident, although authorities suspect drug use played a role.

The crash remains under investigation.

In 2018 Stark County had six pedestrian fatalities. Drivers are encouraged to be alert for pedestrian traffic in urban areas.
