State Panel: Ohio Trauma System Flawed, Lacks Oversight

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A panel of Ohio's top medical experts say the state's trauma system is riddled with flaws and falls short of meeting federal recommendations.

A committee of doctors, nurses, paramedics and hospital administrators this spring gave the state a failing grade of 33 percent.

They say the Ohio Emergency Medical Services board, which oversees the system, has no authority to enforce Ohio's law requiring paramedics and hospitals to send critically injured patients to trauma centers.

Other problems include a lack of trauma training for doctors and other hospital staff who treat trauma patients.

The committee also says there are no trauma centers in southeastern Ohio, which makes it difficult to treat patients within an hour.
