Children to go through first Christmas without mother

LORAIN, Ohio - Three little girls are preparing to go through their first Christmas minus their mother, Action News' Bill Younkin reported.

Lakysha Bright, 24, died of cancer earlier this month. Her mother, Lacy Cosme, has now been left with the overwhelming job of caring for and raising her daughter's daughters -- 4-year-old Kiara, 2-year-old Kiana and 7-month-old Aaliyah.

"She said, 'I'm sorry, mom. I tried,'" Cosme said. "I told her, 'It's going to be OK. I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I promise you, I'll take care of those kids for you. I will.'"

For the past 10 months, Lakysha's family, including her sister Laquita Ayala, watched her slowly lose her fight to keep living.

"It's hard when you have to see your sister like that," Ayala said. "We'd go line dancing together, and then to see her just breaking down (was hard)."

Despite it all, Lakysha (pictured with kids, above) did all that she could to care for her children, but the last two weeks it was almost impossible.

"She prepared them," Cosme said. "She told them mommy was very sick and that she would have to go live with Jesus."

Now, the young children's grandparents must find a bigger place to live because their current two-bedroom duplex just isn't enough.

Lakysha's children will have some sort of Christmas this year. Their grandmother said that she's going to make sure of that. She also guaranteed that they would always have a lot of love.
