Spencer guaranteed $600,000, could earn $450,000 more

CLEVELAND (AP) - Shane Spencer is guaranteed $600,000 under his new contract with the Cleveland Indians, and could earn $450,000 more in performance bonuses.

The 30-year-old outfielder, who until now had spent his entire career with the New York Yankees, would get the maximum $1.05 million if he has 550 or more plate appearances.

Spencer fought for playing time on the Yankees and never had more than 300 at-bats in a season.

His new deal, finalized Tuesday, calls for bonuses of $25,000 each for 325 and 350 plate appearances, $50,000 each for 375 and 400 plate appearances, $75,000 for 450 plate appearances, $50,000 for 475 plate appearances, $75,000 for 500 plate appearances, and $50,000 each for 525 and 550 plate appearances.
