SHARON TWP, OH (WOIO) - A 71-year-old man accused of beating a dog to death has now been charged with animal cruelty.

Medina County Sheriff Deputies say James Mills was at his son's place on State Road on Saturday splitting wood when the beating took place.

Mills apparently got mad at his son's girlfriend's 9-year-old rottweiler shepard mix , Penny, for barking and beat her to death with a metal fence post.

Deputies tell 19 Action News that this dog was not vicious at all.

James Mills pled not guilty to animal cruelty charges in court Tuesday and is now out on bond.

If convicted, Mills could face up to six-months in prison and a one-thousand-dollar fine.
