Cop Attack: Man Accused of Trying to Kill Akron Police Officer Sentenced Today

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - The man who tried to kill an Akron Police officer will be sentenced Wednesday.

Donte Sales, 28-years-old, was convicted of aggravated robbery, attempted murder and felonious assault.

The incident happened in January at the Portage Path Psychiatric Emergency Support Services.

Lt. Rick Edwards was working security when Sales ran at him, struck him the head from behind, and knocked Lt. Edwards unconscious.

Sales then jumped on top of him and began to punch and strangle him, then tried to grab his gun.

Staff members pulled Sales off of Lt. Edwards.
