Close Call: Tropical Storm Danny Weakens, Heads Towards North Carolina

(CNN) -- A tropical storm watch was in effect Friday for the North Carolina coast, but Tropical Storm Danny was weakening as it approached, the National Hurricane Center said.

The watch was in effect from Cape Lookout, North Carolina, northward to Duck, and included Pamlico Sound and Albemarle Sound, forecasters said. A tropical storm watch includes winds of at least 39 mph, possible within 36 hours. But winds from the storm had decreased to near 40 mph early Friday, making Danny barely still a tropical storm, forecasters said.

Tracking maps showed Danny brushing North Carolina's coast early Saturday, before nearing New England later in the day.
