MEDINA, OH (WOIO) - A 7-year-old boy was killed in an early morning fire Monday after 1 a.m. at 223 West Smith Road.
The mother and her five young children all lived in the second floor duplex, everyone was able to escape except for the 7-year-old victim.
The Medina Police Chief tells 19 Action News Reporter Tiffani Tuck the victim's four-year-old brother started the fire by lighting a match and throwing it into a closet.
Medina Police Sergeant Nate Simpson tried to save the boy but ended up in the hospital for smoke inhalation.
The other four children were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation, too.
It is unknown whether or not the home was equipped with smoke detectors. Investigators have not found any during their investigation.
