CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The Cleveland Police Department officially charged Anthony Sowell Tuesday with five counts of murder, rape, felonious assault and kidnapping.
He will be arraigned on all the charges Wednesday morning.
Meantime, sources confirm to 19 Action News that additional remains have been recovered on the property of Anthony Sowell - those remains are believed to be from several additional victims.
Shortly after 12:30PM, a backhoe - which had been digging up Sowell's Imperial Avenue backyard - stopped digging. Investigators put on surgical masks and a sheet was erected to shield the scene.
This, after police blocked off Imperial Avenue on both sides while coroner investigators, detectives and three cadaver dogs scoured the area for evidence.
The bodies of six, unidentified African American women were discovered in various stages of decomposition last week. Five of the victims died of strangulation. The cause of death for the sixth victim has yet to be determined.
Cleveland Police went to serve a search warrant at the residence of the 50-year-old convicted rapist last Thursday and discovered the decomposing bodies.
Sowell was arrested on Saturday after an extensive manhunt. The suspected serial killer has yet to be charged with any wrongdoing.
Officials plan to continue their search at Sowell's property into Tuesday night.
