CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Judgement day for the man who lined his pockets with parish funds.
Lawrence J. Cermak was sentenced to three years in prison Wednesday morning after he stole approximately $330,000 from Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Garfield Heights.
The 59-year-old was hired in July 2002 as a bookkeeper for the church. A customary mandatory audit was done of the parish's finances and numerous discrepancies were discovered between October 2003 through May 2009.
The audit revealed that 69 checks totaling approximately $330,000 in parish funds had been misappropriated during the time Cermak was bookkeeper.
Cermak must also pay back restitution for his sins.
