Alarming Trend: Teen Dating Violence on the Rise

WASHINGTON, DC (WOIO) - Teen dating violence is taking center stage in Washington, DC.

Attorney General Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan met with teens, parents and peer counselors to talk about the problem of Teen dating violence.

The AG says that approximately ten percent of teens are victims of physical violence from a partner over the past year and even more are victims of stalking, verbal and mental abuse and cyber abuse.

A new study released today shows half of all teens polled have said they have been the victim of some type of digital abuse.

The study goes on to say three in 10 young people report having been involved in naked sexting.

19 Action News reporter, Dawn Kendrick spoke with Clevelander, 21-year-old Johanna Orozco.  She lived through a nightmare behind the statistics.

March 5th 2007, her ex boyfriend Juan Ruiz shot her point blank in the face.  In hindsight the warning signs were so clear.

Johanna is now a teen educator for the Domestic Violence Center of Greater Cleveland.
