Fatal Crash: Double Fatal Accident In Grafton Township, Part of SR 57 Closed

GRAFTON TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) -  The Elyria Post of the State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a double fatality traffic crash.

The crash happened on State Route 57 near Highland Drive shortly after midnight on New Year's Eve.

The crash involves a pick up truck and a semi tractor-trailer. The pick up truck was northbound on State Route 57, when it crossed the double yellow center line and was struck by the southbound semi tractor-trailer.

Both vehicles were fully engulfed as a result of the crash.

The semi tractor trailer was driven by 35-year-old William T. Bennett. He was treated and released for minor injuries at the scene by EMS.

The pick up truck was driven by 49-year-old Donald E. Berg. He was pronounced dead at the scene and was later transported to Elyria Memorial Hospital.

A passenger in the pick up truck was also pronounced dead at the scene, and was transported to Elyria Memorial Hospital. The identity of the passenger is not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.

Seatbelt usage for both pick up truck occupants is currently unknown. It's unknown if alcohol is a factor, and the crash remains under investigation.

State Route 57 has been closed since the crash occurred. Traffic is currently being re-routed by the Ohio Department of Transportation.
