CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - It is officially spring, which means O-DOT construction projects will soon be in full swing.

Also, during the past several months, crews on behalf of the Department have been busy installing a series of traffic cameras around greater Cleveland. The Intelligent Transportation System or "ITS" is designed to provide drivers with up-to-the-minute traffic information before they get behind the wheel.  Now motorists can access online traffic cameras by the simple click of the mouse.

Motorists will notice new traffic cameras at the following locations:

  • I-480 westbound at State Road
  • I-77 northbound at Pershing Avenue
  • I-71 northbound at Pearl Road

When complete, the entire Greater Cleveland region ITS system will include approximately 83 traffic cameras, 29 dynamic message boards, 32 vehicle detectors and seven highway advisory radios throughout Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Summit, Portage and Lake Counties.  The portion of the project around downtown Cleveland's I-90 Innerbelt Bridge is expected to be completed as early as September 2010.

Motorists in the Akron/Canton region will also benefit from this new technology.  The new ITS system will include approximately 64 traffic cameras, 18 dynamic message boards, 18 vehicles detectors and two highway advisory radios throughout Medina, Summit, Portage and Stark Counties.

The $18.2 million ITS system is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the entire project is scheduled to be complete in December 2011.  Only minor impacts to traffic are expected as part of the project.  The latest traffic information is available 24 hours a day at
