Editorial: Armed Athletes

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Will someone please tell me what it is with major league sports celebrities and guns?

The latest armed athlete to get into trouble is Cleveland Browns own Shaun Rogers - arrested last week at Hopkins Airport after a loaded pistol was found in his carry-on bag.  it was just last September that Cavaliers star Delonte West was pulled over by cops near Washington, DC while riding his motorcycle and was found to be armed to the teeth. Like some modern day Pancho Villa, West had a pistol in his waistband, one strapped to his leg and another in a guitar case slung over his back.

And, just a few days ago, Washington Wizards' star player Gilbert Arenas was sentenced to 30 days in a halfway house and probation for brandishing four handguns in the Wizards locker room. The poster boy for all this pistol-packing nonsense is football player Plaxico Burress - who is now serving a two-year prison sentence for bringing a gun into a New York night club and ignominiously shooting himself in his leg with it.

But why are these guys armed? Are they afraid of someone? Shaun Rodgers is about seven  feet tall and three hundred fifty pounds. Who's going to mess around with him? I don't get it -but one thing is for sure, neither the fans nor the courts should tolerate it.
