CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A violin teacher was sent to the slammer on Thursday after sexually assaulting two underage students.
Joel Ferren was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Beginning in 1995, a 13-year-old female took violin lessons from Ferren at his Bedford studio. After about a year, Ferren began to seduce the victim by giving her gifts and professing his love to her.
In 1996, Ferren proposed to the 14-year-old victim, gave her a ring, and thereafter claimed to have married her. Soon after, Ferren engaged in sexual activity with the victim until she was 18-years-old.
Ferren also sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl, who was a student of his in 2007.
In court, one of the victims addressed the former teacher saying "I no longer will carry the shame for the horrific crimes he has committed to me and to others. I gladly give that shame back. Shame on you Joel Ferren, shame on you."
On March 16, Ferren was found guilty by a jury of all counts - 51 charges of sexual battery and 6 counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
The judge also found Ferren guilty of carrying concealed weapons.
