KENT, OH (WOIO) – A Kent State University student has been arrested for tampering with safety equipment after a fire broke out at his residence.

Three occupants, including the suspect were sleeping when the fire broke out at 1658 Sassafras Court #255 early Sunday morning. All three residents were rescued by firefighters.

The fire apparently started on the stove.

The smoke detectors did not alert residents of danger because the suspect, 23-year-old Blayke Wiederin had disabled them months prior to the fire.

After talking to officers, Wiederin fled to Iowa in a 2007 Hummer but was arrested in Erie County with the help of the Kent State Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Turnpike.
