CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - 19 Action News has been telling you about the dangers of drop side cribs for years and now there's a push to ban them in the U.S.
The problem is the side rail can malfunction and create a space big enough for a child to strangle.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says over the past 10 years at least 32 children have died in drop-side cribs and they may be the cause of 14 more deaths and hundreds of injuries.
"We have determined that it is time now to stop the manufacturing of drop side cribs," said Inez Tenenbaum Chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Now the CPSC is promising to have a new standard for cribs this year and major crib manufacturers have already agreed to a voluntary ban on drop side cribs and some retailers like Toys R Us no longer sell them.
The federal ban goes much further. It will remove drop side cribs from stores, hotels and day care centers.
