Off-duty officer fatally shoots house intruder

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man who was trying to break into the officer's home in nearby Green, police said.
The man died Thursday morning, according to the Summit County medical examiner. Authorities were trying to identify the man through fingerprints.
Summit County Sheriff's Capt. Larry Momchilov said the deputy, whose name was withheld, was placed on leave, a routine practice in investigations of the use of deadly force.
The deputy had returned home from dinner with his wife late
Wednesday, and both were watching television news in their bedroom when they heard glass breaking in a spare bedroom in the rear of the home, Momchilov said.
The deputy entered the room and saw the suspect trying to get through the storm window, he said. The deputy warned the man to stop, and shot him once in the upper torso about 11:10 p.m. when the man kept coming, Momchilov said.
The suspect, he said, apparently inhaled fumes from paint he had sprayed into a plastic bag moments before the incident.
