Editorial: Bad Week for Unprincipled Politicians

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - It's been a really bad week for a bunch of establishment  politicians, especially the unprincipled ones.

It began with Indiana Republican Congressman Mark Souder who announced he would resign his post after admitting to an extra-marital affair with a part-time member of his staff. Souder leaves like so many before him with those familiar words, "I have sinned against God, my wife and my family."

Well, neither God nor family was able to save some other Washington politicians who fell victim to a growing "throw the bums out" mentality evident at primary elections in several states on tuesday.

The most well-known victim was Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania… who thought that by switching from Republican to Democrat …he could fool the voters and win another term. The voters weren't fooled.

But, the Blue Ribbon for the most unprincipled politician of the week goes to Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal…a rising star in the Democratic party who is running for the senate in his home state. Turns out his claims of being a combat veteran in Vietnam were all a bunch of lies. The New York times revealed those facts on Tuesday and within hours Blumenthal was saying he wasn't really a dishonorable liar--- Oh no, he just mis-spoke ---numerous times. You just can't make this stuff up.

Write and let me know what you think.  I'm Bill Applegate.
