Rebate Rage: Ohioans Up in Arms Over Appliance Rebate Program Problems

SOUND OFF! (WOIO) - There is mounting anger among Ohioans over the state's popular appliance rebate program.

This, after a number of residents, who submitted their appliance rebate redemption paperwork, received a postcard in the mail stating that their rebate redemption is invalid.

The postcards went out to nearly 20% of the tens of thousands of Ohio residents who replaced their old, energy-guzzling appliances with new, energy efficient ones in hopes of receiving a rebate. 

Those who received the postcard have until June 4th to take the necessary steps to correct their rebate application, including resubmitting the appropriate material by mail.

Please Note: All resubmissions should:

  • Include the original postcard
  • Include all required information as explained in the 'Action' section under the reason(s) below
  • Be resubmitted with paid USPS postage to the following address:

Reasons for Invalidity:

Model Number from Receipt
Description: Consumer purchased an ineligible appliance that is either not an ENERGY STAR® rated appliance, or at one point in time was an ENERGY STAR® appliance, but has been removed from the ENERGY STAR® product list prior to the program launch date of March 26, 2010.

Action: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, all appliances must be ENERGY STAR®-qualified and be listed on the current ENERGY STAR® product list. Consumers are encouraged to double-check to ensure their model number is in fact on the current ENERGY STAR® product list (www.OhioApplianceRebate.com – eligible appliances webpage). If you feel your information is incorrect, please contact customer service by phone, toll-free, at 1-888-686-8896.


Missing Original Receipt
Description: The rebate application did not include an original proof of purchase sales receipt.

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, consumers must submit an original proof of purchase receipt with their rebate redemption form. If you do not have your original receipt, please return to the retail store where you purchased the appliance, and request an original merchant proof of purchase receipt. Consumer should then proceed with the directions outlined on the postcard.


Missing Purchase Location
Description: Original proof of purchase receipt does not adequately identify the location of the retail store where the appliance was purchased.

Action: Consumers should return to the retail store where they purchased the appliance and request an original merchant proof of purchase receipt. Consumers should check to make sure the retail location is easily identifiable on the original merchant proof of purchase receipt. Consumers should then proceed with the directions outlined on the postcard.


Missing Retailer State
Description: Original proof of purchase receipt does not adequately identify the retailer's location within the State of Ohio.

Action: Consumers should return to the retail store where they purchased their appliance and request an original merchant proof of purchase receipt. Consumers should check to make sure the retail location, including the state of Ohio, is easily identifiable on the original merchant receipt. Consumers should then proceed with the directions outlined on the postcard.


Missing Purchase Price
Description: Original proof of purchase receipt does not adequately identify the purchase price of the appliance.

Action: Consumers should return to the retail store where they purchased their appliance and request an original merchant proof of purchase receipt. Consumers should check to make sure the appliance's purchase price is easily identifiable on the original merchant proof of purchase receipt. Consumers should then proceed with the directions outlined on the postcard.


PO Box Not Accepted
Description: Consumer used a Post Office Box as a home address.

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, rebates will not be issued to P.O. Boxes. If you live in village or township that uses P.O. Boxes instead of home addresses, you must secure and provide proof that documents this fact from your local United States Postal Service branch. Then contact customer service by phone, toll-free, at 1-888-686-8896.


Invalid Postmark Date
Description: The appliance application was not postmarked within 60 days of the appliance purchase date.

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, all rebate redemption forms and required materials must be postmarked on or within 60 days of the appliance purchase date. Postmark verification is obtained from the application envelope as stamped by the United States Postal Service, and from the appliance's purchase date listed on the original proof of purchase. Invalid Purchase Date
Description: The appliance was purchased prior to the program launch date of March 26, 2010.

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, all appliances must be purchased on or after March 26, 2010. The appliance's purchase date is verified from the original proof of purchase receipt as submitted with the rebate redemption form. The Purchase location was not in Ohio
Description: The appliance was purchased at a retail store that is not located in the State of Ohio.

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, all purchases must be made from an Ohio retail store that is registered in the State of Ohio. Invalid Due to Reservation Status Expired
Description: The consumer did not redeem the rebate before the rebate reservation's expiration date.

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, consumers must redeem their rebate reservation within 3 days after the original reservation date, and then mail all required documentation, including an original proof of purchase receipt, within 60 days of the appliance's purchase date. If consumers failed to redeem their rebate reservation and mailed in their original proof of purchase receipt without the redemption form (but may have included a copy of the reservation number form), consumers will need to re-reserve and redeem a new rebate (if funds are available). Consumers should return to the retail store where they purchased their appliance and request a merchant copy of the proof of purchase receipt. After redeeming their new rebate reservation, consumers must mail the merchant copy of the sales receipt, their redemption form and proof of recycling form (if applicable) to the address provided on the redemption form.


Invalid State
Description: Consumer's address is not an Ohio Address.

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, the ENERGY STAR® appliance must be purchased by an Ohio resident. If you feel this reason is incorrect, please contact customer service by phone, toll-free, at 1-888-686-8896.


Missing Rebate Amount
Description: During the rebate reservation process, the consumer did not properly identify the appliance rebate amount.

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, consumers must reserve their rebate and obtain a tracking number. After purchasing their ENERGY STAR®-qualified appliance, the consumer must redeem their rebate reservation within 3 days of the original reservation date, and mail all required documentation, including an original proof of purchase receipt, within 60 days of the appliance's purchase date. Description: The address provided by consumer is not registered with the Untied States Postal Service (USPS).

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, consumers must be Ohio residents as indicated by their Ohio mailing address as provided during the rebate reservation process. If funds are still available, the consumer will have to reserve and redeem their rebate using the established rebate process online or over the phone, toll-free, at 1-888-686-8896.


Missing Appliance Category
Description: During the reservation process to secure a rebate, the consumer did not properly identify their appliance category.

Actions: As part of the eligibility requirements of the Ohio Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, eligible appliances include qualified ENERGY STAR® refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, high-efficiency gas storage water heaters, and electric heat pump water heaters. During the rebate reservation process, consumers must select one of these appliance categories in order to reserve their rebate properly. If funds are still available, the consumer will have to reserve and redeem their rebate using the established rebate process online or over the phone, toll-free, at 1-888-686-8896.


Missing Consumer Reservation Period
Description: During the process to secure a rebate, the consumer did not properly reserve an appliance.
