Canton, Ohio - Stark County Job and Family Services' (SCJFS) Gasoline Card program is drawing to a close after nearly 2,000 people applied for one of 1,800 gasoline cards. SCJFS staff will begin examining the applications to determine eligibility for the first-come, first-serve program.

"With the amount of funding earmarked for this program, we were only able to purchase 1,800 gas cards," SCJFS Deputy Director of Human Services Tom Thompson said. "We're excited that we can provide a boost to eligible families and the local economy."

To be eligible, families must have at least one minor child or a pregnant woman in the household. Non-custodial parents may also be eligible, however, they must have made verified child support payments in a minimum of six months between May 1, 2008 through April 30, 2010.

Because the program is offered to current customers, applicants will not, in most cases, be required to provide additional verifications such as pay stubs.

Families found eligible, will be notified by mail and given a date and time to pick up their $150 gas card.

The agency will take applications until 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 25 at the agency's Midtown Plaza location, 221 3rd Street downtown Canton. "Unfortunately we can not promise that anyone who applies after Monday, May 24, will be eligible because of the limitation," Thompson said.
