CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A 14-year-old boy injured after being assaulted at the Cleveland zoo.

Charles Smith - who attends Michael R. White School - was on a field trip Monday afternoon. As he and his middle school classmates were walking back to the bus, they ran into high students from Margaret Ireland School, another CMSD school.

Words were exchanged, which lead to a physical fight between the middle school and high schoolers.

That's when Smith says he was sucker punched.

"The teacher was in front of me and three people tried to rush at him but I ducked and moved out the way and then that's when one person was tryin' to fight me and then I, um, and then somebody run up and hit me from behind," said Smith.

Charles has a concussion and was treated and released at Metro.

His mom will meet with Metroparks rangers today. She'd like to know why there wasn't more supervision of the high school kids. Teachers escorting the kids were also roughed up, one's cell phone was smashed. Another thrown to the ground.

"When you send your child to school, you don't expect 'em to come back hurt and get hurt and then when I heard how he got hurt, other kids from another school attacked him," said Charles' mother, Linda.

Metroparks rangers are investigating seven students. Charges are pending.
