Longtime Washington journalist Helen Thomas has abruptly retired.

Her employer, Hearst News Service, made the announcement shortly after a White House spokesman described the journalist's recent comments about the Mideast as "offensive and reprehensible." The 89-year-old Thomas has apologized for saying Israelis should get "out of Palestine."

In a May 27th exchange with Rabbi David Nesenoff, which was captured on video and posted on the website http://www.rabbilive.com/RabbiLIVE/Home.html, Thomas said Israelis should "get the hell out of Palestine" and "go home" to Germany and Poland.
