BRUNSWICK, OH (WOIO) -  A Brunswick Schools middle school teacher slapped with charges after allegations of sexual misconduct.

Kelly Covic - a math teacher at Edwards Middle School since '03 - is accused of having sexual contact with two students in the spring of 2009. No word on the victims exact ages, but they are anywhere from the 6th to 8th grade.

The 35-year-old mother could not be suspended until now, because she hadn't been criminally charged. So Covic spend the entire school year on the payroll and assigned to her home.

The district makes no apology for that, citing the need to remove anyone accused from contact with children. Now that she's been arrested and charged, termination proceedings are underway.

"This is a very sad situation. I mean, I've been sick to my stomach," said Brunswick Superintendent Mike Mayell. "It's not pleasant, but we acted appropriately and swiftly."

"That's the time it took to complete the investigation and presentation of the case to the grand jury," said Medina County Prosecutor Dean Holman.

Covic also faces a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor involving her own children - ages 2 and 3 of the time. Prosecutors offered no further explanation.

Brunswick City School District Superintendent Michael Mayell released the following statement.

"Mrs. Kelly Covic has been employed as a teacher in the Brunswick City School District since 2003. Because of an ongoing investigation, Mrs. Covic has been assigned away from the schools for this entire school year. The District has been fully and continuously cooperating with the Brunswick and Brunswick Hills Police Departments and the Medina County Prosecutor's Office throughout the criminal investigation of Mrs. Covic's conduct. Now that formal charges have been brought against Mrs. Covic, the District will finalize its investigation and proceed with the assistance of legal counsel to address employment issues. The staff and administration of the Brunswick Schools take their responsibilities to educate and to safeguard the welfare of the students very seriously. To that end, where we find that a breach of trust has occurred and/or a violation by a teacher of the Ohio Educator's Code of Conduct - we will act appropriately and swiftly to take disciplinary action."
