CLEVELAND (AP) - Choppy waves. Thunder. Pouring rain. A great day for a canoe trip.
Six environmental activists from Ohio and Kentucky chose Wednesday to launch their Erie Ohio Expedition. They started from Lake Erie's Whiskey Island and paddled to the mouth of the Cuyahoga.
Their destination is 250 miles away. They'll take about two weeks to go down the Tuscarawas and Muskingum rivers to reach the Ohio River.
The group says they're making the trip to honor Ohio's bicentennial and to publicize efforts to purify and protect the state's waterways.
They'll have to portage -- or carry their canoes and gear -- through Akron on Sunday and past several dams.
The group will sleep in tents on shore where allowed. Otherwise they'll stay at private homes or hotels.
