CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - ESPN is reporting LeBron James does not want this free agency frenzy to drag on too long. The report says James hopes to make a decision on his future by July 5.
However, he cannot sign to a team until July 8.
Each season, the NBA has a moratorium period in which teams may hold negotiations but cannot sign contracts.
Several teams will start the courting today. First up to woo the King is the New Jersey Nets, followed by a host of others.
He'll meet Thursday with the Nets' traveling party that includes new owner Mikhail Prokhorov, coach Avery Johnson, president Rod Thorn and hip-hop superstar Jay-Z, a part-owner and James' longtime friend.
New York Knicks, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and of course Cleveland are also on the list.
A major plus for staying with Cleveland is James can earn perhaps $125 million over six years by staying; $96 million over five years if he goes.
We'll all have to wait and see.
