CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Punishment for the man who caused the death of a suburban police officer during a foot chase.

30-year-old Cleveland Heights Officer Thomas Patton died in March when his heart gave out while chasing Malcolm Bryant, who was suspected of spitting in the face of an off-duty cop at a Marc's grocery store.

Bryant - who shuffled into court with a smirk on his face - spoke in court.

"I'd like to apologize to the family and to the court for being stupid and to my family," said Bryant. "That's about it."

An uncle of the officer spoke for his grieving family.

"I don't believe Mr. Bryant wanted my nephew to die, but he's responsible."

Judge John Russo agreed. Bryant didn't mean to cause a death, but he must be held responsible.

Bryant worked out a deal with Cuyahoga County prosecutors and will only serve four years behind bars.
