UPDATE: (WOIO) - Former Senator Ted Stevens has died in a plane crash in southwestern Alaska.
Still have no word on the fate of the others on board, including former NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe.
Severe weather made it hard for rescue crews to reach the remote area 20 miles north of the city Dillingham.
The NTSB said it appears four of the nine people aboard survived when the small aircraft went down Monday evening.
The plane was registered to an Anchorage-based communications company and according to the FAA, had been operating under visual flight rules as the pilot flew from one lodge to another.
Stevens was the longest serving republican senator. He was 86-years-old. Corruption allegations caught up with Stevens in 2008. He was convicted in a federal trial.. and narrowly lost his battle for re-election.
