I Spy: Surveillance Cameras don't seem to deter ATM smash-n-grab criminals

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Thieves in Cleveland steal another ATM.

So 19 Action News did some investigating to find out why these crimes keep happening, even though they're caught on tape.

Police seem to think that more than one crew of crooks is getting in on the action.

They're stealing a van, crashing into a store and stealing the entire ATM.

On W. 25th surveillance video shows one guy took the ATM himself while his partner went for the register.

The store owner is in shock.

"I've been here 20 years and I never thought they'd be able to break through the front doors because we have two gates and it's hard to break."

A store on Cleveland's east side was hit in June and ATM's were also stolen in both western and eastern suburbs as well.

Last year in northeast Ohio nine ATM's were taken.

This year 15 have been stolen already and there's four more months left in 2010.

"The sheer number of these what we're finding is it's a new trend it's a simple way to enter a building and obviously make some cash," said Cleveland Police Sgt. Dave Rutt.

Crime Stoppers is putting up reward money if you can help identify some of these guys.

That number is 216-252-7463 and remember you don't have to give your name.
