CANTON, OH (WOIO) - Canton Police have arrested a 27-year-old they believe is responsible for dragging a dog on a leash while riding a bicycle.

Aaron C. Ryan was arrested Wednesday and charged with cruelty to a companion animal, a first-degree misdemeanor.

The gruesome scene happened Tuesday, August 17th around 12 p.m. on Dueber Ave. SW. and throughout the area.

Concerned animal lover Cheryl Adkins witnessed the abuse while driving in the area, performed a U-turn in the street and screamed for the thug, whom she went to high school with, to stop.

"There was something dragging behind his bike," said Adkins. "I thought it was a black trash bag at first. Then I realized it was a dog...a lifeless dog on the end of the leash."

The dog suffered multiple injuries and is currently being treated at the Stark County Humane Society.

Adkins says that if no one steps forward to claim the pup, she will happily adopt him.

As for Ryan, his mother says that the dog isn't his, and she had no idea of the charges against her son.

"I don't know what's the matter with him," she said.
