ASHTABULA, OH (WOIO) – Family members of a fallen Marine are livid after the Marine's uncle was suspended from work without pay for taking days off to attend funeral services.

Carl Corbissero tells 19 Action News "I got a phone call that the Marines left my sister's house and that my nephew Kevin passed away"

After Corbissero got the news, he called a co-worker whom he considers a supervisor and told him the news "I was crying and he said just take as much time as you need" said Corbissero.

Using a mix of sick time and funeral leave, Corbissero took several days off.  Imagine his shock when he received a letter from Ashtabula City Manager Anthony Cantagallo telling him that he'd been suspended for 5 days without pay.

Corbissero says he has paperwork proving that he used two approved days off and two sick days for the funeral services, but the City Manager says he didn't approve the days.

The City Manager issued disciplinary action to be taken and sent Corbissero a letter. Click here to read the entire letter sent from the city.

19 Action News went looking for answers form City Manager Tony Cantagallo, but he had taken the day off from work. At Cantagallo's home, the lights were on and the cars were there but nobody answered the door.

Meanwhile, flags in Ashtabula are flying at half staff to honor fallen Marine Lance Cpl. Kevin M. Cornelius, who died August 7th, 2010 while serving Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
