PUCO approves SBC to provide 311 service

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has cleared the way for SBC Ohio to offer 311 service to municipalities.
The short-cut telephone dialing code is for non-emergency police and government agencies. It was created to take pressure off the 911 system.
Akron will have the service in operation early next year, said Jeff Fusco, the city's deputy service director.
The 911 number is sometimes flooded with calls that aren't emergencies. The 311 number is intended to provide quick access for callers who want to speak to authorities but are not reporting a crime in progress.
Callers on the 311 number will be put in contact with their local government and then routed to an agency that can best serve their needs.
