WASHINGTON (AP) - Evenflo Company Inc. is recalling 236,384 infant car seats prone to damage while being installed, the federal government said Tuesday.
Cozy Carrier infant seats manufactured between November 2001 and August 2002 are affected by the recall.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tests indicated that the detachable base that connects the seat to the vehicle was prone to damage, meaning infants might not be safely restrained. An NHTSA spokesman said no infants have been killed or injured by the defect.
Vandalia, Ohio-based Evenflo did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Tuesday.
Evenflo is offering a free upgrade kit to owners of the seat through its Web site (link, above) or a toll-free number -- (800) 582-6698. Owners also may go to an authorized vehicle dealer to get the seat repaired.
This is the second Evenflo child seat recall in 16 months. In April 2002, the company recalled 28,312 Triumph car seats because of a defective harness system.
