Cleveland woman killed in ATV accident

ELIZABETH, W.Va. (AP) - An all-terrain vehicle ran off the road, overturned and hit a tree in northwestern West Virginia, killing an Ohio woman.
January Pierce, 23, of Cleveland, was a passenger on the ATV that crashed Saturday night in Wirt County, State Police said Monday. The driver, 23-year-old Adam Paul Brown II of Akron, Ohio, was treated at Minnie Hamilton Hospital in Grantsville and released.
Neither Pierce nor Brown was wearing a helmet or other protective equipment, State Police said. No charges have been filed.
It was at least the fourth fatal ATV accident in West Virginia this year. Twenty-seven people were killed in ATV accidents in the state last year, the most since researchers began tracking fatalities 13 years ago.
West Virginia has one of the worst ATV death rates in the nation, but the Legislature has failed for seven consecutive years to pass safety regulations.
