Deputy accused of bringing cocaine into jail

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (AP) - A Knox County sheriff's deputy has been charged with smuggling drugs into the jail in Mount Vernon.

Joseph Germani III, 31, was arrested -- and fired -- on Saturday when authorities intercepted a package containing cocaine and drug paraphernalia at the jail.

Sheriff David Barber said his office had received a tip that drugs were going to be brought in.

Germani was charged with conveying drugs into a detention facility and was forced to appear in Mount Vernon Municipal Court on Tuesday.

Germani had been with the sheriff's department since December of 2000.
