Trail section named for congressman

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail has a new name in Stark County.
The commissioners of the Stark County Park District, meeting Monday along the trail, voted to rename the 25-mile portion the Congressman Ralph Regula Towpath Trail.
The action caught Regula, the area's longtime congressman, off-guard, although a smile slowly came to his face.
"You really did catch me by surprise," he said.
Regula was honored for his support in Congress for the Ohio & Erie National Heritage Canalway that stretches from Cleveland 71 miles to New Philadelphia.
Regula and 80 trail supporters had gathered for the dedication of a 150-foot-long tunnel that completes a 3.5-mile section of the trail in southern Stark County.
A federal grant that Regula, R-Ohio, arranged provided the funding for the $576,000 tunnel project.
