Now taking Orders: Chevy is hoping the volt will give the electric car market a jolt

STRONGSVILLE, OH (WOIO) -

Local car dealers now taking orders for the 2012 Chevy Volt.

The Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and has been rated as the most fuel-efficient compact car in the US.

Chevrolet says the car travels between 25 to 50 miles on its lithium-ion battery and gets 93 miles per gallon of gasoline.

So will the Volt change the way we think about electric cars? And will it change the way we think about driving?

Chevy hopes so, so do local dealers like Bob Serpentini.

"Four adults can sit in the car. It's a real car, I've driven it and it's a real car and its very quick because there no lag the car boom gets going," said Bob Serpentini of Serpentini Chevy.

Serpentini Chevy in Strongsville is now taking orders, for the nine volts they expect in November. He expects it will be next spring before he can actually keep an inventory on the lot.

"When the battery goes low it converts to a gas generator. It always runs on electric so you really have about 250 miles of range," said Bob Serpentini of Serpentini Chevy. "People want to be enviornmentally friendly."

Gas prices are still high, so Chevy is hoping the volt, that they say is a step above and beyond a hybrid, will give the electric car market a jolt.
