Elyria man arrested in connection with downtown trash fires

ELYRIA, OH (WOIO) - Thomas Fagan Jr. Was arrested Thursday in connection with a rash of downtown dumpster arsons.

This, after Elyria Police Detective Van Wormer and Elyria Firefighter Atkinson were working surveillance detail in downtown due to a rash of dumpster arsons.

Firefighter Atkinson had responded to two fires on Tuesday, June 27th and Wednesday June 28th in which a male was spotted by Atkinson on scene. The first arson was listed at Moss' Restaurant and the second at First Church.

After witnessing the two fires, Chief Keith had Atkinson view restaurant security video and confirmed that the same male was setting the arsons.

Thursday, June 29th at 11p.m. Officers received a report of a dumpster fire behind Spitzer Plaza located at 523 Broad Street and responded to the area.

Firefighter Atkinson observed a male later identified as Thomas Fagan Jr. to be standing across Kerstetter Way from the entrance to Tremont Street and advised this was the same male who was behind the rash of arsons in the area.

Fagan was taken into police custody for investigation where he admitted to a total of 8 fires beginning April 13th through the current fire under investigation.

As a result, he was charged with 2 counts of arson for the current incident and the June 27th fire behind Moss' Restaurant.

Addition charges to be sought via grand jury.
