WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - Warrensville Heights Police received a call to respond to the area of Walford Road and McCann Road for a male with a gun assaulting a female around 7:15 p.m. Sunday night.
While officers were responding, they were informed that the suspect had left the area in a teal blue colored van. The suspect's direction of travel was relayed to WHPD dispatch by a third party caller, who was following the suspect vehicle.
WHPD with assistance of Highland Hills PD picked up the suspect vehicle on Harvard Avenue traveling at a high rate of speed. Both Police Departments pursued the suspect vehicle to the area of Evanston Road and E. 190th Street, where the suspect vehicle lost control attempting to make a left turn and crashed into a guardrail.
As officers exited their vehicles and approached the suspect vehicle they observed that the suspect was in possession of a handgun.
The suspect was ordered to drop the weapon, which he did not comply. The suspect then pointed the weapon at the officer and the officer discharged his service weapon hitting the suspect twice in the upper torso.
After a brief struggle the suspect was removed from the vehicle and placed under arrest. The suspect was conveyed to Hillcrest Hospital by Warrensville Heights Fire Department Rescue and later life-flighted to Metro Health Medical Center where he was confined for his injuries.
Officers were not injured.
Several witnesses and police officers on scene tell 19 Action News that the suspect is believed to be a Cleveland Corrections Officer. Witnesses also say Warrensville Heights Police were reportedly yelling to the suspect "You should know better, you are a C. O." meaning corrections officer and that the suspect had a police badge on his person.
