University Heights firefighter seriously burned while battling house fire

SUMMIT COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

A University Heights firefighter is recovering from burns over 25% of his body.

Firefighter Paul Nees was injured fighting a fire at a home on Milton Avenue early Saturday morning.

Nees was injured in a flash-over inside the home. That is when super heated gases ignite, causing a sudden burst of flames.

Luckily, two other firefighters were able to drag him out. A move that saved Nees' life.

"The heat, it was so hot it went right through him," said University Heights Fire Chief John Pitchler. "They got him outside and took his gear off and it just peeled some of his skin off."

Three other firefighters were treated and released for their injuries.

The man, woman and three kids living at the house were treated at Hillcrest Hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is not known, but officials suspect an electrical issue.
