Police investigate downtown Cleveland shooting

Cleveland Police investigating an overnight shooting downtown.

It happened at approximately 12:18 a.m. Third District Officers responded to Ontario and South Roadway for shots fired. Once there cops located the victim with gunshot wounds to his right lower leg.

Cops say Melvin Lesure, 29, and the two suspects were involved in an argument over cigarettes and during the argument the arrested male, later identified as James Berger, produced two handguns. After producing the handguns Berger gave one of the guns to the other suspect and both males shot at the victim as he attempted to run away hitting him in the lower right leg.

Subsequent to shooting the victim both males fled the scene in an unknown direction. The victim was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center by Cleveland EMS, where he was confined for his injuries.

While touring the area for the suspects Third District Officers located Berger on a RTA bus at St. Clair and Ontario. Upon approaching the male who was seated near the bus driver he was observed with his hands in his waistband. Officers ordered him to show his hands which he complied. As Berger removed his hands from his waistband a thump was heard and upon checking a revolver was observed on the floor by him. Berger was arrested without incident. Officers continued to search for the second suspect with negative results.

The second suspect is described as a black man in his 20's. He was wearing a gray shirt and carrying a tan back pack.
