Police: Fatal home invasion was not random act of violence - Cleveland 19 News Cleveland, OH

Cleveland Police say home invasion murder victim may have known his killer

Cleveland police still looking for the killer in a deadly home invasion on Walton Avenue.

19 Action News has learned the savage attack of Jeff Mechling, 40, was not a random crime.

Police believe Mechling knew his killer, which is a relief to neighbors. "I feel a little bit more comfortable, I just moved out here from Akron…so I feel better to know that, it's a sad situation…he's a nice guy" says Bonnie Martin.

Mechling's girlfriend says a masked man wearing a puffy winter jacket crawled in the window just before 9AM Tuesday morning, and shot then stabbed Mechling to death.

The suspect also only stole a small amount of property, so police don't believe the motive was robbery.

Police only a have a vague description of the suspect.

The Cleveland Division of Police is asking that anyone with information about this incident to contact the Homicide Unit at 216.623.5464. Anonymous information can be given to Crime Stoppers by calling 216.252.7463 or Text messaging to Text TIP657 plus your message to Crimes (274637).
